The world wide web is truly a world of wonders. In the past several decades, it has exploded. A superhighway of information, it is now, more than ever, a user friendly arena that allows a person to carve out their own little corner of the world. However, a growing fad allows not only you, but your newborn, to make to make their own digital footprint in the ever growing internet blogosphere. Baby blogs are becoming an increasingly popular way to update the world about your little bundle of joy. To fully understand the phenomenon, we must examine what baby blogs are, before looking at some of pros and cons associated with them.

First, what are baby blogs? Baby blogs are blogs designed with the specific intent of sharing information, photos and videos of a young child. They typically are established after the child is born, but some baby blogs are set up well before delivery, chronicling the pregnancy of the mother. Once the baby is born, the blogs are usually updated several times a week with accompanying photos and videos. Posts may include descriptions of a day’s events, or be limited to special occasions or milestones (baby’s first bath, baby is learning to talk, etc.), depending on the parent’s preferences. Sometimes just one parent is responsible for updating the baby blog, and sometimes it is a collaborative effort. While some parents will choose to leave the blog public, most establish security settings so that only friends and family members are able to view the posts.

You may be wondering what all the fuss is about with baby blogs. The thing is, there are some big pros and cons associated with baby blogs. On one side, it is a very efficient way to keep your friends and family updated on the development of your child. Phone calls are not always convenient, picture texts can be expensive, and if you live far from home, the demand for information may be great. This is an easy way to get out information on a regular basis, quickly. It also provides a digital scrapbook for you to look over as time goes on!

However, that does not mean that baby blogs don’t come with a downside. If you don’t have proper security on your blog, you may end up with a baby stalker, which is creepy in a multitude of ways. Moreover, you may irritate some friends and family members with your frequency of posting. For some people, you can never put up enough. For others, three daily posts about your child’s diaper habits is a little overwhelming. Take this into consideration as you set up your baby blog.

If you get your health insurance coverage at work, like 60% of America does, you’ll find it hard to truly appreciate how terrifying it is, when like what 10% of America is going through now,  your health insurance provider raises its rates by nearly half, like they are doing California and Maine. If President Obama’s new health care plan does come through, it won’t make that much of a difference to those with workplace coverage. The 15% or so in America that has no cover of any kind – their lives will change forever. That puts the figure at about a quarter of the entire population of the nation, of people who either pay out of their own pockets or just do without. Health care reform would be wonderful for these people; and not an inconsiderable number they are too. But really, how bad is it dealing with a health insurance company of your own, and not going through the company you work for? The Blue Shield health insurance companies of Texas, Florida and California have their individual insurance policies published online, and if you read them, you would know.

Here’s an interesting statistic; BlueCross Blue Shield of Texas is the biggest player in that state. And also, Texas is the state where there are the most people who have no insurance whatsoever – a full quarter of the population. Let’s say that you get by on doing freelance landscaping jobs around your town in Texas. You want to get your individual insurance, and you sit down with an agent who represents Blue Shield health insurance. The first thing he does is, check you through a list of more than 100 health conditions that will disqualify you from getting any kind of care if you answer in the positive. If you are pregnant right then, you can forget it. If you have had an organ transplant or Addison’s disease, or have had some kind of minor stroke, the agent will just get up and leave. And if you happen to be a little overweight, they will still accept you, but at a big jump up in the premiums.

In patriotic Texas, a war veteran who has had an amputation suffered fighting a war, can right away be refused any kind of health care policy with Blue Shield health insurance. You can however get something at higher rates, if you only had a partial amputation. At least this makes some kind of crazy sense; but why would they deny you anything if you have acne, or varicose veins? And oh, don’t forget that if you happen to be a minor or an athlete or an oil driller working offshore, you had better keep walking. This is the craziest policy anyone ever saw – why would they deny someone in the fine physical shape of an athlete, health insurance cover?

So basically, Blue Shield health insurance only wants to offer you health insurance if you have practically no disease whatsoever, and don’t work on a job that might one day give you something. It certainly makes a lot of business sense for them, but it doesn’t make any business sense for the customer. With President Obama’s healthcare reform, denials like this would be illegal; and yet no Texas Republican, supports it. But things are coming to a head now. All these health insurance companies are raising their rates through the roof, and there may be no option but to accept reform.

There is a study about parenting done in Britain recently that finds that working women who leave their children on a daily basis while going out to work, risk raising children who come to have poor eating habits and poor exercise tendencies. It is called the UK Millennium Cohort Study. The  research draws from a study of nutritional and physical activity habits of more than 10,000 children under five. And before anyone tries to counter these findings by calling into doubt the meaningfulness of the sample used (or wondering if the researchers may have been neglected children themselves), the study seems to have taken all kinds of possibilities into account, adjusting for the race, education and the financial positions of the mothers involved.

So what is it that these children do that distresses the researchers so much? The researchers found that mothers who worked even part-time, came home to find that their children resist fruits and vegetables more. They have a worse television or computer habit too, when compared to children of stay-at-home mothers. These children are often seen to use passive entertainment like computer games and television more than two hours a day – far more than what stay-at-home moms would allow. And while homemaker mothers found that their children could keep their snacking habits under control, working moms have children who keep reaching for unhealthy snacks or colas. So what is it that the researchers wish to say about parenting out of all this?

To begin with, they feel that there is nothing to it other than the fact that working parents have less time to stay around and provide a good example for how children should eat and live their lives. Even work arrangements where mothers get to work from home a good part of the time do not seem to really help. Apparently, even a short stint at work by a mother affects children. Of course this study is extremely unpopular with women, and we can see why. It seems to suggest that if women care about their children, they should give up all their dreams, or feel guilty for the rest of their lives. But the women who sit on the other side of the fence feel their views have finally been vindicated.

In the end, one does have to wonder about why the studies about parenting choose to villainize the women, the mothers who choose to work, but end up neglecting their children. What is wrong with blaming the father for neglectful child-rearing, one wonders. Why cant women have their dreams like men do, and yet have a cared for set of children that both the parents take turns to rear well. And while we are on the subject of funny studies, did you hear the one that claims that children who are spanked, grow up with lower IQs? Apparently, it is a question of trauma, plain and simple. A child who is subjected to trauma, is less available, mentally, to learn. This was a study conducted over a five-year period. Most would argue that that was hardly adequate – it is as good as it gets.

If you have hardwood floors, you want to be sure they are all smooth and safe. While falling and getting wood splinters from such floors may not be deadly, it can be very painful for your baby (and you) and you don’t want them to go through it. Infants usually develop milk allergy symptoms early, typically at 3-4 months of age. However, it’s also true that most babies outgrow early milk allergy by the age of two. As with adults, milk allergy symptoms may come on suddenly, or not for up to 10 days of ingesting the milk product. The degree of allergy can be mild or quite severe. In both cases, common slow onset types of milk allergy symptoms in infants include:

  1. loose bowel movements, sometimes bloody
  2. vomiting or gagging
  3. skin rashes, hives
  4. colic
  5. irritability

Unfortunately, these symptoms may be attributed to several other causes, so check with your pediatrician for advice.

With the rapid onset type of milk allergy symptoms, wheezing, swelling and diarrhea which is bloody are common, in addition to the above symptoms.

If you suspect your infant shows milk allergy symptoms, ask your doctor to investigate. If your doctor determines that milk is the culprit, they will advise you on how to best proceed and specific foods you’ll want to avoid.

It’s weird how much effort people put into baby clothing, when the fact is that babies are not themselves that fashion conscious of creatures. Oh, sure, they will cry if they are wearing the shirt that they don’t like, but all you really have to do is spin them around, or show them something shiny and reflective, and they will begin to giggle and drool just as cheerily as ever. Nonetheless, even baby shoes are a hot topic today among parents. They will buy all kinds of baby shoes, including baby sneakers, and little ballet shoes, as if the babies were about to go run track, or do a graceful leap through the air. The strange fact is that babies shoes come in almost as many varieties as do adult shoes, and can be every bit as expensive.

Of course, I suppose that the function of baby shoes is a little different than those of adult shoes. With baby shoes, there are a few basic things that they need to do. They need to protect the feet, and hold up to crawling around, and possibly a bit of drool. Adult shoes go through much more than this, often miles of walking every day, to say nothing of running, dancing, and various other activities. The fact is, almost any baby shoes will hold up just fine when the baby is young enough, and not yet walking. Therefore, the other function of baby shoes is just to look cute to the parents, and to their friends to whom they will be showing off the baby.

There are many ways that cuteness is accomplished with baby shoes. One of them is simply through the miniatureness of everything. If you look at babies closely, they are not really actually very attractive creatures. They are pudgy, their heads are too big, and they drool and snot all over everything. So the real thrill that people get out of babies is just that they are tiny, and somewhat odd versions of us. It is the same thing with baby shoes, which look like smaller, pudgier versions of the footwear that we wear on our feet every day.
